Voice Acting

Sat Sep 27, 2008, 7:17 AM
So I'm really thinking about doing voice acting for my career. Or maybe not a career, but rather a side-job of some sort. The idea of making it big is appealing, but quite a big dream due to the competitiveness of it. Besides, I still have yet to begin and lucky me, I don't even know where the start line is.

I've been playing with the idea several years ago but was never really serious about it until now. I've had some crazy ideas going on for awhile, first a doctor, lawyer, UN Representative (cough), writer/author, interior designer (which I was also serious about actually), actress/singer in the Philippines, graphics designer, video game creator, and many more. I just cannot seem to make up my mind. And now this idea of being a VO artist...well, I'm hoping this really is it.

First thing's first...we're moving back to California in December and will be living near Los Angeles. All the better since I'm quite familiar with LA and a bunch of my family and relatives lives there. I heard that the three major cities where voice acting is produced are Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Toronto, especially if it's going to be cartoon and anime work, which is what I'm aiming for. Video games as well, and maybe a few commercials. Getting an agent would be difficult too, but we'll see how that goes. Connections is a big thing, but I may be able to figure that one out...

All in all, I'll have to take acting classes and maybe get some theater background just to help out. I'm not sure about that idea yet, but it may not be so bad. A few years ago the mere idea would have totally freaked me out, but I've been more social and gotten out of my shell finally, and I think performing in front of a huge crowd may be an exhilarating experience.

I've also acted in front of my friends before and was really convincing since I managed to fool them back in the days. But anyway, I'll have to do some more research about this. I spent a few hours last night reading some stuff and for awhile, I kinda got discouraged but I managed to reign in my thoughts and think, "Wait a minute, everyone had to start somewhere, and they all did it in different ways."

Now if only I can keep that in mind as I face many obstacles ahead. =] The studio stuff will have to wait until we get settled in Cali. It will be quite an investment, but I'll start out little by little. In the meantime...I can certainly practice with scripts from fan fictions or anime/video game scripts and what have you. I'll have to figure out how to make a demo reel too. Much work to do!
